"The secret of genius is to carry the spirit of the child into old age, which means never losing your enthusiasm." Aldus Huxley
I hope you're having a wonderful Saturday. I'm keeping my nose in the news about the possible tsunami that might affect my family living in Hawaii. All these earthquakes around the world are very unsettling and my heart goes out to all the people struggling to survive. I thank the stars up above that we are safe, we are loved and we have each other. TM : )
Let's play word association. Read the words below and think about the first word that pops in your head. Let's see if we're thinking the same. Ready?
Friday Weekend No school Wine Scroll down for my answer: YEA!!! Have a great weekend, you deserve it! TM : ) Why is the unknown so much scarier for some people and not for others? Some get anxious and think too hard about all the possibilities of what can go wrong, while there are those that let the water roll right off their backs. I think it's a matter of perspectives on what has been experienced in each person's lives. But I would hope that one could compare where they were and where they are. When you truly see where you are compared to where you've been, it really is not so scary after all and the water starts to flow. TM : )
Do you still get questioned by strangers about why your kids are out of school? I'm sure you do, because I still do after all these years. You've heard them all before, the questions are basically the same, "Is it a school holiday?" or "No school today?" Yes, we've heard it a million times and to keep an expressionless face that doesn't scream something like, "None of your business!" can sometimes be a bit of a strain. I think people just automatically say things without thinking. Here's an example that we're all familiar with: You see your neighbor washing their car, so you automatically say, "My car next!" In my preMommy days I was a flight attendant and when I greeted the passengers entering through the 1st Class Cabin (the only entry for all passengers) the response from them was always the same, "Did you save these seats for me?" Automatic. Without thinking. So instead of rolling your eyes at the next stranger that asks you the same old questions, do like I did when I was a flight attendant... Smile BIG, show authority, and hide behind the cockpit door! TM : )
Just a reminder and I know you already do... Practice kindness on a daily basis. Your children will reap the benefits of your already generous nature and learn by the examples that you are setting. Homeschool allows us to put kindness in our curriculum and practice it day in, and day out. And you know what they say, "Practice makes perfect!" TM : )
Today I was invited to go to a staff meeting with the teachers I work with through the county. I know what you're thinking, "If you're a homeschooler, why do you need a teacher?" I homeschool through the county and it is the most main stream way to homeschool in California. If you read my Options? page, I talk about the differences and what it all means. The reason I bring this up, is that no matter how you homeschool or who you go through to homeschool, there are always options. When you are unsure, KNOW that you have a choice. I know that the laws vary from state to state, but the "core" homeschooler within us will find a way. Options are everywhere, even at a county staff meeting. TM : )
"The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn." Alvin Toffler
If you are reading this post on the above date (Saturday), I want to thank you. As most of you know, I'm here to help you through the week by encouraging you and making you feel that you are not alone in this thing we do daily... teaching our children. Homeschool can be lonely at times, but knowing that there is a place that you can click on for words that understand you, makes it a little less remote. Thanks again for visiting on your Saturday. Come back again as I enjoy your company. TM : )
We have made it to another Friday! This is going by too fast. Next thing you know, it will be the end of the school year, then summer. I can't even begin to think that far ahead! I just read Tara's blog and she's ALREADY picking her curriculum for next year! YIKES! Okay, breathe Tracy... inhale, exhale, wait a second... I'm not in labor or anything, it's just school for Pete's sake! And, who is this Pete guy anyway? I think I'll Google him. I think I'll Google how to keep time from moving sooo quickly. I think... I think I won't think and just enjoy the up coming weekend. TM : )
